We all talk about the ill effects of smoking a cigarette, perhaps with a cigarette in our hands. IRONIC, isn’t it? The reason being, we all believe that nothing is going to affect us, it is all for others. But, we like to ignore the fact that we are one in the crowd, who has equal probability of dying, smoking a cigarette. We can talk about many drugs in this world, but let’s consider only smoking as it is the most common of all.
It all starts with curiosity, temptation, then style, then habits and eventually addiction. With a strong will, smoking can be stopped as any of these levels. Look around smokers, you will find them. Look around for true examples of people who stopped smoking and you will find them too. Just be sure of what you want to find and where you want to go.
You know all of these, but still let me put across a few hazards of smoking:
• More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.

• If nobody smoked, one of every three cancer deaths could be avoided.

• Smoking causes an estimated 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men1,2 and 80% of all lung cancer deaths in women.

• An estimated 90% of all deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease are caused by smoking.

• Smoking causes various types of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer too, which may eventually lead to death.

Smoking is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Smoking still remains one of the leading cause of preventable death. Smoking has the dubious distinction of affecting all the systems from head to foot.
For a healthy and a happy life, QUIT SMOKING.
