Independence Cup 2016 Day 2: Rain, Cheers and Team Spirit!
With the Junior batch being relieved from their midterms, Day 2 of the SCIT Independence Cup started with the first match for the Junior C Division boys against Senior Division B. A couple of hours before the first cricket match, the rain gods showed no mercy. The match was deemed cancelled. Well, not exactly, until a sudden break from the clouds put a halt to the rain. The game started an hour after the scheduled time, players warmed up, ran down a few blows to and from the bat, the crowd gathered, organizers set the stumps and play began.
Div. B Seniors having scored a dominating 60 off 8 overs with a couple of batsmen scoring quick runs, despite a few good overs from the juniors, found itself in a comfortable position with some loud support from the 15-17 batch. Juniors came in to bat, a few dot balls, pressure rose exponentially, with the Junior Div. C batsmen finding it tough to cope up with the mounting run rate. With the captain losing support at one end, despite some last minute fightbacks, the chase was not successful. Senior B Div. won against Junior C Div. by 11 runs.
The next match on the cards was between Senior C Division and Junior B Division. With the latter out for batting, the first eight balls of the match went to become dot balls. The openers struggling to connect the ball and running out of partners with half the team back into the pavilion in less than 4 overs. Junior B Division captain managed to take the team to a fair total of 30. With 31 to win and the whole of SIC Campus getting intense with the support for Senior C Division, it was going to be a tough task to defend the total. Yet again, the result was no different with the Senior team winning by 10 wickets and exercising their dominance.
Following this, was a change in sport with Volleyball coming into picture. Junior Division C boys got on the field against Senior Division D with hopes of making up for their earlier loss in cricket. With a bigger audience and louder cheers, the match started with the Seniors taking an early lead, though the Juniors tried really hard, the first set was claimed by Seniors. Without giving up hope, the Juniors were back into the game in the second set smash after smash. However, the seniors soon picked up pace and after a close fight, they ultimately won the set 15-12.
The next volleyball match was between Senior Division A and Junior Division B. The fightback from Juniors after the previous match’s last set continued with Junior team strategizing the serves as after the initial hiccup, the Junior Division B won the first set. Soon after the first set, the Senior Division A came back strongly and dominated the proceedings until a change in serve changed the fortunes for the Junior Division B. They took the ball and kept serving one after the other as the scorecard began shifting towards them. Finally, the serve which won them points, came back and won the match. Junior Division B opened their account with a victory and the whole of 2016-2018 batch celebrated its first victory!
The last of the day’s fixtures was a Football match between Senior Division D and Junior Division A. With complete ball possession, the Senior Division D breached the Junior Division A’s defence and scored goals consistently. Dominance continued in both the halves of the match with Senior Div.
