The gift of speech!!!
How many times has it happened with you that you didn’t have something and yearned for it so desperately?, and when you got it all its importance seemed to be so diminished as if you had never ever wanted it. I am sure everyone of us would have experienced at some point in our lives. It tells us that we only value something only till we don’t have it and once we get it, all the respect, desire, desperation gets lost somewhere, perhaps this is the case with our gift of speech, you don’t believe how special this gift is? Let me make an attempt to assign magnitude to this gift.
In Sikh mythology there are believed to be close to 84 lakh species of living beings and human birth is achieved only after a complete round of these 84 lakh species. That means we have been born 83,99999 times already in different forms and this is our 84,00000 birth. Out of these 84 lakh species only humans have the ability or the gift to think and speak, you may argue that animals have their own language but then a dog cannot communicate with a cat, which we humans do so effortlessly with one another. Broadly speaking animals communicate by way of noises and gestures and we do by means of articulate speech. What’s my point? My point is, understand the importance of this great gift, think and if appropriate use your speech mechanism to convert what you are thinking into speech. Words like arrows and bullets don’t come back once they have been uttered, you may go on apologizing profusely once you have made a mistake while speaking something, but the damage is hard to repair. As the great saint “Kabir” has said:-
Aisee Vani Boliye, Mun Ka Aapa Khoye
Apna Tan Sheetal Kare, Auran Ko Sukh Hoye
which can be translated into:-
Speak such words, sans ego’s ploy
Body remains composed, giving the listener joy
