A guest lecture on Cloud Service Models in AWS platform was conducted on 27th August, 2017. The speaker for the event was a Mr. Satish S who is also an alumni of SCIT from the batch of 2014. He is working as a Lead Senior Security Engineer at Security Innovation India Pvt. Ltd in Pune. His area of expertise include information security, vulnerability assessment and audit, penetration testing, reverse engineering techniques.

The speaker started with introduction to the topic by asking the students the difference between cloud computing service and data center. The difference between the two is that in AWS we can change our resources on demand whereas in the traditional data center we need to give prior information at least 2 days in advance. He then introduced the students to the concept of cloud service models like IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and went on to explain further about the services offered by Amazon Web Service.

The speaker showed the students how the resources are allocated for IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS using the Amazon Management Console which is also a multi factor authentication system. He also talked about the three Amazon web services which are AWS EC2 (Amazon Elastic Compute Model) that provides secure, resizable compute capacity in the cloud which is basically used as an IaaS service.

The second service he talked about was AWS LightSail in which, with a couple of clicks, configuration from a menu can be chosen and launch a virtual machine preconfigured with SSD-based storage, DNS management, and a static IP address. You can launch your favorite operating system (Amazon Linux AMI or Ubuntu), developer stack (LAMP, LEMP, MEAN, or Node.js), or application (Drupal, Joomla, Redmine, GitLab, and many others).

The third service he talked about was AWS S3(Simple Storage Service) which has a simple web services interface that you can use to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites.

The speaker also showed the students how to create static websites using AWS S3, how to launch Virtual Machine, Elastic Bean Stalk demo and Oracle VM Virtual box.

The session was a learning experience for the students as they got to know how the cloud services are actually implemented in the industry and has given them exposure on how to choose the best of the services available for the organizations when they will be moving into the corporate world.
