It’s the fastest growing democracy, sixth largest economy, independent and multilingual. So what holds back this pluralist nation?

India’s rise is hindered by its lack of equality.

The Indian Preamble advocates

JUSTICE, social, economic and political

LIBERTY, of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity

I envision an India which advocates equality. Where the poor are treated and respected like the rich. Perks, privileges and power are vested in people due to their contribution to society and not due to their social status. Where knowledge and karma are respected more than Mercedes and mansions. Several quotas established on the basis of caste and creed to support the weaker sections of society are obsolete and misused. I envision an India with revamped laws to ensure that help reaches the economically unstable section.

I envision an India where a woman can walk alone on the streets , way past midnight without the fear of her integrity being at stake. Where a girl can have male friends without being looked at with a disrespectful gaze. Where gender does not hold merit to one’s abilities.

I crave a society where secularity is implemented in the mindsets and not only on paper. Where Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains live in mutual harmony, unbiased about regional differences. Where inter-caste marriages are not a taboo but an amalgamation of  India’s rich culture. Where faith and belief are a flexible state of mind and not absolutes to live by.

Development and advancement would be inevitable if inequality is eradicated from our society. The process may be slow, it may be long drawn, but change is the only way to evolve

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

-Rabindranath Tagore
